Hot Springs in Beitou, Taipei

Beitou & Xinbeitou

Introduction

Located next to the Xinbeitou Hot Spring Park in an area once also called Dire Dale or Hell Valley. Dire Dale is a scalding hot spring on Datuen Mountain. The water here is acidic and said to have medicinal properties. The temperature reaches 90, because the sulfuric water is hot enough to boil eggs and many tourists saw this as a must-do activity, which caused a lot of serious burns. Now the local government has set up fenced-off observation areas to "protect" the tourists.

Shamaushan

Introduction

Sulfur discharge has made the valley to the east of Hsingyi Road barren and turned the earth yellow. This region is volcanically active and the rich resources of hot springs water often seep out, emitting steam into the air. Many hot spring hotels and restaurants have been established here, attracting many visitors. Lungfeng Hotsprings are separated from neighboring Fenghuang Hotsprings by no more than a mountain ridge, and the two hot springs areas are in fact connected by a number of hill trails. Locals also call these hotsprings draw water directly from the Huang River and water volume depends largely on rainfall. Fenghuang Hotsprings also called the “Matsu Cave Hotsprings”, these springs are located in Peitou’s Chuanyuanli, the same district as the Lungfeng Hotsprings. The Fenghuang Hotsprings are of a mild carbonic acid type, different from the sulfuric acid springs typical of volcanic regions and making them distinctive from the majority of springs the the Yangmingshan and Peitou areas. The spring water here is clear and due to its hogh iron content, have also been dubbed “ iron springs”. They were especially popular during the period of the Japanese occupation.
