Hsin Chu Science Park (HSP) Located in the northwest part of Taiwan, Hsin Chu is also named the Windy City for three sides of the city are surrounded by mountains with only the west side facing the sea. Nowadays, Hsin Chu is mostly renowned for the famous Hsin Chu Science Park (HSP). In the proximity of the park are prestigious research and academic institutions, such as Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Tsing Hua University, and National Chiao Tung University, which provide quality human resources for the science park while offering on-the-job learning opportunities for employees in the park with its outstanding teaching faculty and facilities.

HSP - Taiwan's first science park - was established on December 15, 1980. Committed to creating a development base for Taiwan's top high-technology industries, the park has been home to a total of 370 high-tech companies by 2003, mostly focusing on semi-conductors, computers, telecommunication, and opto-electronics. As the locomotive engine of the island's high-tech industries, HSP has helped promote the domestic economy over twenty years and was the pushing force behind Taiwan's world-famous economic miracle. HSP prides itself on its excellent development, establishment, and overall management in the park. Not only has it become a successful model science park globally through many years of efforts, but a number of manufacturers in the park have also won acclaims within the country and abroad alike for their enterprise image and reputation. National and international personages and media have been attracted to visit the park, which is now a model example to academics in economics and urban and rural development alike. HSP is more than a high-tech town; its landscape and environment are as beautiful as a European community's. The area adjacent to the man-made lake is particularly an ideal destination for walking dogs at sunset or enjoying the fun of barbecues with a crowd of friends and relatives on holidays. Reminder: Do not forget to obtain permission from the Science Park Administration first before you hold your barbecue party. The Science Park Life Hub sits on No. 1, Kung Yeh Tung 2nd Rd., HSP, Hsin Chu City, right in front of the Science Park Administration. Located right at the core of the park, it is only a three-minute drive to the nearest freeway interchange. This six-floor building on 3,420 square meter of land offers dining, art, reception, exhibition, conference and business functions, and is the only combination building that incorporates expertise and leisure as one. The HSP is approximately 15 minutes away from the Hsin Chu City center and 50 minutes from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by car. Its road traffic mainly relies on freeways, and it is a 70 kilometer distance to Taipei. It takes 90 minutes to Keelung Harbor to the north and Taichung Harbor to the south by road, while the North-South Railway offers another transport alternative. Ching-Tsao Lake (the lake of green grass) This lake has been opened for quite some time now and is part of a reservoir which stores water from the Yaker River. Although small in size, the lake is the oldest scenic spot in Hsinchu and fringed by centuries old temples amid lush greenery. Ching-Tsao Lake used to be a mini-sized lake hundreds of years ago, which was also used as a dam. After the end of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan, the first magistrate of Hsinchu County ordered to reconstruct the dam, resulting in a 30 square kilometer area for storing water. It was the first large-scaled construction in Hsinchu since the establishment of the local government. Although it has been one of the eight greatest scenic places in Taiwan, Ching-Tsao Lake lost its irrigating function due to the sedimentation of soil. The sedimentation also affected the views. Fortunately, in the past few years the Hsinchu City Government has been continuously renovating the lake and restoring its original views. The Hsinchu City Governament is now actively constructing public facilities in coordination of the natural features of Ching-Taso Lake, including gardens, bridges, bird-observing track, lake-encircling track, and resting places. These features provide relaxing places to the visitors so they may truly appreciate the views.

Hsinchu City HallHsinchu City Hall is located in a two-story brick building completed in 1926, during the Japanese colonial period. The U-shaped building combines a western architectural design with an eastern-style slanted tile roof. The protruding front portico has a double-column design that, along with the two short flanking towers adds to the striking appearance of the building. The front lobby is equally impressive with its western-style arched corridors and Roman columns. Hsinchu East GateThe city of Hsinchu was originally known as Jhucian. In 1733, a bamboo wall was built around the city under Danshuei vice prefect Hsu Chih-min. In 1826, Cheng Yung-hsi and other members of the local gentry successfully petitioned the Cing emperor for permission to rebuild the wall, work on which began the following year. The new wall was 2,838 meters in circumference, 4.6 meters high, and 4.9 meters wide. It had four gates: the "Sunrise Gate" in the east, the "Retreating Brightness Gate" in the west, the "Gesyun Gate" in the south, and the "Gongchen Gate" in the north. All but the eastern gate were torn down in 1902 to make way for road construction. Once marking the main entry to Hsinchu, the East Gate sits on a granite base pierced by an arched walkway. On the upper half of the gate is a building originally constructed of wood and later rebuilt in concrete. The building is supported by 24 columns on which sit a double-eaved roof with a short upturned ridge that adds to the power of the design. In front of the gate is a stone stele recounting the history of the construction of the Hsinchu city wall. There is also a public square that joins both traditional and modern elements at the front of this major Hsinchu landmark.

Gangnan Coastal Area Gangnan used to be one of the key salt mills in the Qing Dynasty. At that time the salt fields were located at Chinshui, Hutze Mountain and Yuchekang. In the mid-1920s, the beach area was gradually silted up into land, the salt industry, in turn, gradually passed into oblivion. Today, the Gangnan area is the paradise of nature for birds.

Gangnan Canal flows from Gangnan to Jincheng, 20 meters wide and 1,500 meters long. In days of old, Gangnan Seaside Area played the role as a buffer between the sea and the land, providing tranquil inland vista along the 17km length. The arched bridge matched with pavilions is a popular background when visitors take photo pictures.

The inland reclaimed tidal land has turned out to become a multifaceted environment with evolution for three decades. It is now the favorable zone where the aquatic birds take a break or simply reside. Very naturally, it is the core area in the eyes of bird viewers. Paddy rice dominates the local crops, with twice harvests every year. Green onion dominates in the winter. Amidst the crisscross paths on the farmland, the paddy rice is swinging while the frogs are occasionally seen. At the area immediately neighboring the coast, you must be impressed by the tranquil pastoral vista which divides the canal and the outer seas into strikingly different scenes for the leisurely life. The beefwood and hibiscus trees and such windbreak forests flourishing alongside the canal and ditches present the enriched ecology.

The pavilion, the wooden planked footpath and the continual landscaping improvement in the wake of the river course dredging formulate the development orientation toward international vision. The Hsinchu City Government earnestly intends to encourage universities and social bodies to conduct studies over the wetland ecology in the vicinity, the sandy bank preservation and, in particular, the characteristic canal. All are welcomed to join the Dragon-Boat Races and boating competitions with those facilities.

Transportation:Get off at Hsinchu Raiway Station and take bus No.15 to the final stop at the harbor.

Image Museum of Hsinchu Culture BureauBuilt in 1933, the Yule Theater was the first air-conditioned theater in Taiwan. The 500-person capacity theater joined both ancient Roman and Arabian motifs to present a vision of grandeur intended to display the national power of the then occupying Japanese government. The second floor of the theater was heavily damaged by aerial bombing in 1944. Two years later, the theater was brought under government administration and renamed the Guomin Theater. It subsequently attracted huge crowds as a movie house. It also was used for concerts and army recruitment drives. In the 1980s, the theater became involved in a property dispute between the Hsinchu county and city governments. It also suffered from declining attendance with the rise of rental videos, forcing the theater to close its doors in 1991. The theater was reopened in 1996 to serve as the Hsinchu City venue for cultural events organized as part of a national arts festival. The reopening sparked renewed interest among locally prominent persons and movie buffs in restoring the theater. The Chinese Taipei Film Archive was commissioned to draft a plan for the establishment of an Image Museum at the theater. In 1998, the Council for Cultural Affairs provided funding for the yearlong restoration project culminating in the museum's opening on May 21, 2000. The mission of the museum is to preserve the cultural experience of the Guomin Theater and to serve as a shared image space for city residents. In addition to promoting and showing alternative and older movies, the museum archives, displays, and researches cinema-related items and promotes cinema education.

As the mountain is covered with thick forests and exudes the fragrance of flowers, one can feel the kind of freshness when walking on the trails. Therefore, the shaded trail of the mountain has become one of the local people's favorite spots for recreation and exercise. To ensure the safety of people exercising there, the city government has in recent years applied a no entry policy for cars between 00:00 to 08:00 everyday. Visitors can walk down the mountain from Hsinchu Commercial & Vocational High School along Boai Street. At the peak stands the Jieshou Kiosk. There are 33 Guanyin statues in the forest which are also attractions of the spot.

【新竹小吃Snacks

The snacks at the City God Temple have always been a culinary and tourist landmark for the city. The temple was first constructed during the Qianlong reign (1736-1796) of the Qing Dynasty, and numbers of snack vendors gather in its courtyard. The older ones have been operating there for upwards of 50 years, and they are especially attractive to visitors who want a taste of history. The so-called "City God Temple snack vendors" also means those at Falian Temple, which is devoted to the worship of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, and is located just beside the City God Temple. Most of the vendors at the City God Temple sell traditional Hsinchu meat balls and "tribute meat-ball soup," but the also serve up soft cakes, rice with pork, cuttlefish stew, and ox-tongue cakes.

In addition to snacks, since Hsinchu County has the highest concentration of Hakka people in all of Taiwan this is also an excellent destination for travelers who want a taste of delicious Hakka cuisine. Traditional Hakka foods, including pickled vegetables, board noodles, intestines with shredded ginger, and thrice-cooked pork with cured turnip greens, each has its own distinctive mouth-watering flavor.
